The best candidates are repetitive, rule-shaped tasks that touch data: assembling reports from multiple systems, drafting follow-up emails, summarizing documents, moving information between tools, and preparing quotes or paperwork. The teardown session takes real attendee workflows and automates them on stage — and is honest about the ones an hour can't finish, because those show where the real work lives.
No — watching is completely fine, and most of the room does exactly that. But volunteers get the best deal at the retreat: the task they hate most gets torn apart and automated in front of them, on real work, with the whole method visible.
